A social robot.

I joined the MIT Media Lab’s Personal Robots Group as a Research Assistant. I worked closely with my supervisor and PhD candidate Sooyeon Jeong to assist in launching a study exploring how social robots can help people improve their emotional wellbeing by living with them in their homes.

Meet Jibo!

Jibo is a social robot that spun out of the Personal Robots group at the MIT Media Lab.

Research Goals

The goal of the research study aimed to explore how social robots can help people improve their emotional wellbeing by living with them in their homes for 8 weeks. Jibo guides users through positive psychology exercises.

Part of the research involved participants filling out frequent mood reports measured across valence, arousal, and control. I designed the corresponding icons for these scales that show up on Jibo’s touchscreen face and that participants can then touch to select.

Text leaves room for confusion. To visually guide users, I filmed, edited, and narrated an 11-minute Jibo Wellness Study Participant Video Guide that visually guides participants on how to interact with Jibo and what to expect.

Website

Having a robot live in your home for 2 months is scary. To help participants stay informed on the entire process, I designed a 28-page Jibo Wellness Study Participant Guide, a comprehensive guide with information from beginning to end—unboxing Jibo, setting it up, study basics, helpful tips, and wrapping up.

This study and others conducted in the group needed a place to live online. I designed and developed the front-end website for the MIT Living Lab.
